Mediale Erbe der DDR, Das : Akteure, Aneignung, Tradierung

Today's ideas about the GDR are strongly influenced by the media. Mass media, media sources in educational contexts or even private photos, films and music play a key role in shaping memories and knowledge about everyday life and political repression in the GDR. The research association "The media legacy of the GDR. Actors, appropriation, transmission" therefore aims to analyze the creation, transformation and use of media with a GDR connection.

Both "mass media" (television, films, internet) and private media (photos, narrow films) and usage environments (schools, museums, individual media consumption) are examined and processed. The association combines interdisciplinary approaches from history, communication science and history didactics. The partners bring a wide range of experience in this research field and combine East and West German locations as well as university and non-university research and research communication.

"The media legacy of the GDR" is being investigated by people from three academic disciplines at three locations. The association brings together history, history didactics and communication science on the one hand, and the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, the Free University of Berlin and the Leibniz Center for Contemporary History Research Potsdam on the other. This combination and the concept of "heritage" allow a diversity of perspectives on media materials and media environments that is unparalleled: from the traditional leading media to feature films and documentaries to 8mm films and photo albums, from television to museums, schools and families to digital platforms, from the past in East and West to the present.
